Merritt Island girls soccer return to state

Merritt Island and Viera guaranteed a few more tickets sold for next week’s girls state soccer tournament bound for Melbourne High.

The Mustangs and Hawks both shut out opponents in regional finals at home on Friday, earning berths in the state semifinals. Merritt Island will play a Class 3A semifinal on Wednesday, Viera in 4A on Thursday.

The Hawks won their first state title last year, and the 2-0 win over Mitchell on Friday kept the drive to repeat going. For the Mustangs, now 27-0-2, a 3-0 win over Robinson meant a third consecutive trip to the final four.

Both games were scoreless at halftime. In the second half, goals were scored by Kayli Jacobs, Kaley Verpaele and Kellie Krygier, who also assisted one.

“We’re closer to each other than any other year we’ve been here,” said Robin Herman, one of 10 seniors on the team. “We all want each other to win. We’ve been together pretty much since our freshman year.”
