Merritt Island High School girls varsity soccer clenches the 5A, District 8 title after an overtime thriller versus Bayside High School.
The Mustangs would enter the district final as the top seed, hosting the #2 ranked Bayside High School (Palm Bay) for the final match before the state championship tournament.
Merritt Island and Bayside played a full 80 minutes of regulation and remained deadlocked at 0-0. Two 10-minute overtimes were then played with both teams still held even. Following the overtime periods, the game moved to a penalty kick shootout. The first round of the shootout included five penalty kicks for each team, in which the Mustangs prevailed, picking up the program’s 15th District Championship.
Goals:
Brooklyn McDuffie (C), Breezy Kovac, Payton Gibney, and Ashlynn Elek.
Sophomore Julianno Trujillo was the Mustangs goalkeeper. She made 12 saves during the match and one penalty kick save.
Merritt Island Mustangs now move into regional play on their quest for the girls program’s fourth state title.
Girls are 14-2-2 entering the state playoff tournament.
