Merritt Island’s Martin leads All-Space Coast Girls Soccer 2021

The numbers Jessica Martin puts on the stat sheet won’t draw the attention of the average high school soccer fan.

She scored two goals and assisted on two others last season, but that wasn’t what was important. The statistical numbers that show the significance of Martin to the Merritt Island High team are those that aren’t on the stat sheet, because she didn’t allow opposing scorers to put them there.

Other coaches and players notice that quite well, and Martin is the FLORIDA TODAY Girls Soccer Player of the Year for 2021.

“She more or less shut down many of the top goal scorers in the county this year,” coach Nathan Trout said. “Jess was the hardest working player on the field, every game, and nobody can take that away from her.”

A four-year starter, she switched to defense as a junior. In her time with the Mustangs, Martin was a state champion, a Florida Coaches Association All-Star and FACA All-State.

Next year, she’ll be an Eastern Florida State College women’s soccer player, continuing her career in the sport.
