November 13, 2021 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MERRITT ISLAND, Florida – Merritt Island High School Girls Soccer celebrates a monumental milestone as the program kicks off their 35th season.
Founded in 1986, the girls soccer program has established itself as one of the most dominant in the area.
Merritt Island’s girls soccer teams have captured 14 District titles, been to 16 straight post-season region finals, competed in 11 state semi-finals, eight state finals, and hold three Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state championship titles.
The program has had a multitude of student-athletes receive county and state athletic honors and has seen more than 50 girls move on to play collegiate soccer.
On December 2, 2021, this year’s girls varsity soccer team and coaching staff will welcome alumni and former coaches to join in the 35th anniversary celebration. A special pre-game ceremony will recognize alumni in attendance as well as honor the Carswell Family for their contribution to the program, which spanned across more than two decades.
Harry Carswell was the girls program’s first coach in 1986 and remained at the helm through 1990. Harry’s son, Scott Carswell went on to lead the Mustangs from 2001-2018 before retiring from high school soccer. During Scott’s 17 season’s as head coach he tallied more than 300 wins, 13 straight region finals, eight state finalist appearances and captured three state championships.
Rusty’s Seafood is a participating sponsor of this celebration and is the primary sponsor for special pre-game attire commemorating the 35th anniversary. The girls varsity team will wear these 35th anniversary shirts during warm-ups for each game this season.
The public is invited to attend this event.
