Merritt Island Soccer Coach Earns 425th Win

January 25, 2022 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MERRITT ISLAND, Florida – 25 years, 425 wins, two state championships.

Scooty Carey, Head Coach of Merritt Island High School’s Boys Varsity Soccer team prepared for the 2021-2022 season like he always has.  For the 25-year legendary coach and his staff, it’s just another day on the turf, except this season he would reach milestones most only read about.  Coach Scooty has been carrying the black and gold torch for two and a half decades and on January 10th, he led the boys soccer team to victory, the 425th win under his leadership.

Merritt Island High School’s Athletic Director, Jeff McLean said, “It’s no secret how he has accumulated so many wins, it’s called time commitment and hard-work, which he has done in building a soccer program from youth to high school.”

Carey is now coaching sons of Mustang alumni that played for him during his early years at Merritt Island.  Two generations of Mustangs have called him Coach, and he’s not done yet.

While it would be easy to take all the credit for such a decorated coaching career, Carey is quick to recognize his dedicated staff for their contributions.  Jason Cope, Boys Varsity Assistant Coach and Jerad Merbitz, Merritt Island’s Junior Varsity Head Coach, both Mustang alumni, have been coaching with Carey for 20 years.  Brian Rye, the team’s lead Athletic Trainer has been on the Mustangs’ sidelines for more than 25 years while equipment and game day preparations are taken care of by longtime MIHS Team Manager, Buster Beal.  Together, they’ve positively impacted hundreds of young lives while staying true to the traditions Merritt Island’s athletics program is known for.

During Carey’s 25 years at the helm of boys soccer, he’s led the Mustangs to district titles, regional titles, multiple FHSAA Florida State Playoff appearances, and two state championships.

Next up for this year’s squad is the start of post-season playoffs.  Merritt Island ended regular season as Cape Coast Conference Champions, have won nine of their last ten games, and head into the district tournament as the top-seed.

When you’re around for 25 years, there’ll be ups and downs but one thing’s for sure, don’t count this coach out.  He knows what it takes to win, and he’s proven it more than 425 times.
